Article Marketing for the Purpose of Driving Traffic

When you are using article marketing for the purpose of driving traffic, you are instead going to submit a large number of original articles to a small number of article directories. Generally, you should submit each article to the top 5 or 6 article directories, based on the traffic level and pagerank of the article directories. This will allow you to gain maximum exposure to actual visitors, but will not create as many links into your web site.

This method relies on the pagerank and traffic of the article directories themselves to get traffic to your web site, rather than creating high search engine rankings for your own web site. One advantage to this method is that you do not have to wait for your web site to slowly climb from a pagerank of 0 to a pagerank of 6 or 7 to get traffic, you can simply get traffic from the article directories themselves.

The disadvantage to this method is that the bulk of your traffic will be dependent on the traffic of the article directories. If the article directories themselves were to go out of business, or the search engines were to delist or ban the article directories, then you would not be getting traffic whereas if you had built multiple inbound links and natural search engine traffic, you would not be impacted as strongly if a few of the article directories went out of business.

Once again, I am hesitant to answer the question, how many articles do I need to write? I think the question should be, how many articles can I write?. At the time of this writing, I have written over 1200 articles, and am actively writing and submitting more. At what point do I stop? I have every reason to believe that when I have 2400 articles I will have more traffic than I do now with 1200 articlesand of course, there will still be room to grow from there.

I can tell you this, if you have the attitude that you are just going to write a few articles and see what happens, you will be surely disappointed. A few articles will tell you nothing. You could get a few subscribers, or you could get hundreds of subscribers, but neither scenario will give you an idea of how well you will do long run in article marketing.

You see, with article marketing, each month you are adding articles to your store of online content. What this means is that each month there are more opportunities for people to find, read, and click through from your articles. To visualize this, imagine that you submit 100 articles per month for one year. Do you think you will get more traffic in the 12th month than in the first month, or the third month? Of course you will, because you will have more articles for people to read. You cannot simply think that you get so much traffic if you submit 100 articles this month because next month you will have all of this months articles online, plus the new ones you write and submit. And of course that continues to be cumulative through each month.

What is Article Marketing

Article marketing is a means of using articles to generate traffic to your website. You achieve this initially by writing articles containing useful content, relevant to the topic of your site, and then submitting them to article directories. If your writing is sufficiently compelling, readers will want to know more about what you have written, and will click on the link you provide to your website.

Article submission does two things. Firstly it provides you with the opportunity to persuade the reader to find out more from your website, as inferred above, and it also provides you with a one way link back from the article directory. The higher the page ranking of the directory, then the more credit the search engines will give you for the link. Engines such as Google take your link popularity as a significant factor when calculating where your webpage should be listed in the index for the specific keyword your page relates to.

Your Article Must have Merit

However, it does not stop there. Should the visitor consider that your article is of sufficient merit to warrant them using it as content on their own website, they are entitled to copy it so long as they include your name as author, and your authors resource box, complete with webpage URL. You then get a one way link back from all the sites that use your article, and also visitors that click on your link from these sites.

Thats the theory, but how about the practice? In fact it is slightly more difficult that that. The article has to be well enough written to be accepted by the directories first, though from what I have seen that is not too difficult. Some directories are quite liberal as to what they call writing. It is not the directories that are the problem, it is the readers. People have a certain standard that they expect of internet writing, and if they feel that it is not met then they will click away from the article.

Dont Try to Fool the Reader

The article must also be of interest and relevant to the theme. You dont get people clicking to visit your website unless they find your content of interest and feel that your website could be of potential use to them. So write about what you know, and dont try to fool anybody. Many people who access your article will know more that you about the topic, and will spot any inaccuracies immediately. Be accurate and try to provide information that will help them. Visitors to your website want to be helped, have a question answered or a problem solved.

Your resource box is also important. Dont say too much about yourself: readers are not interested in your life history. Just tell them that they can find out more on your website. Provide them with a link a page in your site that deals exactly with what you wrote about and preferably with the same title, so that when they get there they will start reading.

Use Anchor Text where Possible

If you provide a link to a page within your site, rather than just the home page, it is regarded as of being more important to a search engine, especially if that link is provided by means of anchor text. That is text that indicates the topic of your web page, rather than being just a URL. You can do this if html is allowed. If you dont know how to use html, just write something to the effect more information on this topic can be found on my web page This Topic.

Write that exactly, inserting your own website and page URL, and your resource box will have This Topic as a clickable link. The search engines will associate your web page as being connected to This Topic, and that will improve the listing of that page.

Article Marketing: The Five Indisputable Rules of Author Bio Creation

Hey! Who's that I see, typing feverishly as brilliant ideas flow from furious typing fingers to the article submission box? Is that YOU??

Well, aren't you the dickens! You found out about article marketing, and that is exciting and inspiring indeed. Now let me ask you a question, dear Article Writing Friend:

Do you know what you're trying to achieve by writing web articles?

Why, of course you do! Silly question, yes? You want people read your article, decide you're cool, witty, interesting, brilliant, etc.- because you are. Then you want them to visit your website.

Now, how will you get them to visit your website? You're already managed to divert their attention to what you have to say in that dazzling style that's you and you alone. But how will you get them to go all the way down, down, down to the bottom of that article, and click your URL?

1. You will stop thinking of your article bio as your resume.

A potential web client or customer does not care to see your list of credentials at the end of an article. As they read your article, they may love what they see, but you're still a stranger. They just want to be entertained, informed, or gratified in some way. It's all about THEM, not YOU. They just want to know who out there can help them. So if you start trumpeting about your vast successes, you'll get them to react, but not in the way that you want. Their reaction will be to CLICK AWAY. So for your business's sake, don't laundry-list your accomplishments in your author bio.

2. You will start thinking of your author bio as the gateway to prosperity.

Where does your fortune grow? It grows right in the website that is the home base for what you sell. How are people going to get there? By reading your articles, becoming interested in what you can offer them, and then letting you shuttle them there via your website URL. How will you shuttle them? Tell them what to do! Call the reader to action: Visit http://wordfeeder.com for more information. They're reading that bio box as fast as a finger-snap. If you don't want to lose the customer, tell them what to do and do it quickly.

3. You WILL NOT include more than one URL on your article bio.

Ever hear of Bio Boxing? Probably not, because I just made it up. Bio Boxing is what happens when two URLs fight for attention in your bio box. If you read two URLs in one author's bio box, what do you do? Look at one. Look at the other. It's a fifty-fifty shot at finding the answer you need. So you take a deep breath, pick and click. Ohhh!! You crapped out. That website was not even remotely close to what you hoped to find. What do you do now? Get up, get a glass of iced tea, and forget about this whole incident. In article boxing, nobody wins the fight. So don't include more than one URL in your bio box.

4. You will write one bio for each article category that you write to.

If you haven't noticed, article websites are ingeniously laid out by industry. In one article, you can be a religious muse, and lead your readers to a spiritual website. You would classify this article in the spiritual section, of course. In another article, you can write to the foodie crowd and lure people to your site where you sell chocolate chip cookies. Note that each of these articles requires its own uniquely-written bio box and corresponding URL link. I'll say it another way: don't mix and match your article categories in your bio box!

5. You will start thinking about your bio as FREE advertising.

You've bought ad space before, right? Okay, suppose you sell keyboard cleaners, and one day Staples.com comes by and offers you free ad space on their site. In this space, would you also include a link to that other website where you sell donut holes?? Of course you would not! Likewise, use each bio box as your FREE ADVERTISING for ONE website that attracts ONE AUDIENCE that you just spoke to in your article. Consider the world's biggest corporations; Old Navy, for example. Old Navy is owned by the Gap. Do you EVER hear a reference to Old Navy in Gap ads, or vice-versa? No, NEVER!

One of the biggest rules in advertising is to not distract or confuse the customer. Remember the points mentioned above, as a way to ensure that the elusive article reader won't slip right through your nimble typing fingers. Make each article work for you. Target your audience throughout the cohesive package of the article submission form, from beginning to end.

Remember that in each article, you will write to ONE audience within ONE category, and the goal is ONE click destination. Pay special attention to the largely ignored author bio, as this is the spot that either makes you or breaks you. Use that author bio box to your advantage while you still have the chance!

Types of Writers in Online Article Marketing

As we study the online article marketing venue, we see so many levels of article authors. We have seasoned veteran writers and even many published novelists as well as individuals who have only written one or two articles. There are complete novices, student, reporters, authors, industry leaders and we can classify them into various categories such as:

  • Genius
  • Enlightened
  • Brilliant
  • Experts
  • Authority
  • Creative
  • Student of Subject
  • Computer Generated
  • Key Wording Bandits
  • Poser (BS’er)
  • Plagiarizers
In considering all this and describing the differences of the "Type of Writers" out there. I was thinking of adding the "Knowledge Distributor" as an add-on sub-type to many of those types of writers listed; also the "Ego Writer" or "Pure Opinion" or "Blog" writer. I also realize that there a many cross-over types where a writer might be a combination of some or more types, even sometimes in the same article.

Thus if we could design a program to "Catch Mood" and have sub-type designation, similar to the Voice Recognition software which catches "voice inflection" or emotion, no matter what dialect, I think we might have a very good search tool for the reader. Of course this might cost some money, but there are some VC companies in San Jose that I am SURE would like such a tool.

Such a tool could be used for searching thru research papers, intelligence, Blogs, threats, opinions to find information that is relevant and it might also help us find the geniuses, experts, authorities and enlightened individuals who can help with the forward progression of mankind.

You see, I believe, as perhaps Plato did, as he seem to elude to the concept that everyone in a society should do what they are best at and be alleviated from as much of the trivial-ness activities as possible to concentrate on those endeavors.

So the searching tool would not only be hyper-value added for the reader of this site or to add to a semantic search feature on Web 2.0 or 3.0, but might benefit all aspects of sifting thru the 10 plus billion web pages to find what you are truly looking for.

Of course in building any AI system we must remember that software programs of this type work on definitions and not like an actual human brain. But if we can better understand how the human brain does all this and how best to classify the types and sub-types and combinations and anomalies of combos, we might serve us all to a huge degree. So, those are my thoughts.

4. You must write a lot of articles if you wish to get onto the first page of Google. This is the best way to get onto the first page of Google and stay there. Flood the marketing with your articles and just keep writing. You have to write more than 100 articles. Don't worry, it'll be easy.

5. Follow the guidelines. Don't break the rules. You don't want to get your valuable article marketing account deleted. You'll get taken off of Google!

Article marketing can be an extremely powerful tool for internet marketers. If you haven't started using articles as a means of getting traffic, I would definitely recommend doing so. However, if you plan on learning, you should make sure you avoid these common mistakes.

1. Articles Too Long.

Many inexperienced article marketers make one error, writing articles way too long! No one wants to read 3000 words of gibberish and then click on the link to go to your website and read more. If your articles are short an sweet, the reader will get the point, but still be up for checking your website out as well.

A good length for an article is about 500-600 words. It's not too short, or too long, and you can include all the necessary information. If you can cover your subject in fewer words, than that's even better, but most websites have a word minimum you have to reach.

2. Poor Author Bio Link

The whole functionality of article marketing relies on the Bio Box, which you include your link in. If you want people to click through to your website, you need to write something to captivate your audience.
