There's Fast, And Then There Is Effective - Guess Which One Will Make You The Most Money?

In my last article, I suggested that you can change the world by writing articles that make a difference to you. Also in that article, I said that if you want to write more articles, then you should read more articles. It seems like there are two ways to do everything on the Internet: the fast, easy, massive powerful way, and the right way. Now, if at this point you are thinking why are those three sentences all in one paragraph, and does this maniac think he is going to be able to pull these three different things together. The answer is *Yes,* and in less than 10,000 words too... Let's get started.

When I first started online, I was fortunate enough to be taught to start with a content website. After learning about search engine optimization (SEO), keyword content, authority sites, and back links, I knew I needed to submit articles to article directories so I could built back links to my site, helping me give my site more credibility and increasing my rankings in the search engines.

I was taught that I was not to expect the articles to bring traffic to my site, but that it was the links I wanted for better search engine rankings. (I no longer believe that last statement.) I was also taught that it was better to pick specific directories that were actually related in theme and content to the theme and content of my website.

So, what did I do, I came across and ad that said I could have my article submitted to over 500 directories in less than a day. In case you have not noticed, I am the kind of guy that thinks if two aspirin are good, then ten must be better. I also want to say, that in my training they did teach that SEO was not a fast process, but that if done correctly, it was a lucrative one. Anyway, I thought I was going to jump right on the fast track and get two or three of my articles posted in over 500 directories, and this would bring hundreds of people to my site, and that the search engines would want to put my site to the top of the page, do not pass go, do not collect 200 dollars.

Well, like I said, there is the fast, easy, massive powerful way, and then there is the right way. Guess what, I did not get much traffic, maybe 3 or 4 visitors, and I did not get my article posted on hundreds of directories. Did I mention that deep down inside of me a little voice was saying, if everyone did this, there would be millions of worthless articles stored on hard drives that would serve no purpose except to create back links? Then the little voice said, if millions of people did it, it would be valueless to the search engines or anyone else. Let's contrast that to what I am doing now.

Now I am trying to write 30 articles. I have 21 active articles on ezinearticles.com. I have had about 300 people read these articles and about 10 of them have been published elsewhere by I don't know who. I have personally read about 50 to 60 articles in this directory myself. I really like this article directory. I have confidence that my articles bring value to my readers and to the directory, because I write about things that I think are honestly interesting and important.

When I finish writing 30 articles, I plan on making keyword content videos out of some of them and posting those videos on YouTube with back links to my site. I have my profile filled out on ezinearticles.com and my picture posted. I did a search to see if I could find any of my old articles, and I found one in a directory that I never heard of and it has been viewed 5 times and although it did have my resource box, all it had in the profile was my first and last name. I surprised that I haven't had a hundred people call me off of that one article aren't you?

Once I get these 30 articles written, I may do some research and pick a few more directories and post some of them with those. I will read articles and do a little research before I pick those new directories. Now, ask yourself one simple question. If everybody did it the way I did it the first time, who would benefit? Now, ask yourself another question, if everyone started with one directory completely filled out their profiles, read several articles from different authors before carefully writing articles of their own giving their unique perspective and then actively participated and contributed to another directory a few months later, who would benefit? Like I said, there is the fast, easy, massive powerful way, and then there is the right way. Are Reciprocal Links Really Dead?

When Google devalued reciprocal links in their search ranking algorithm, I, like many webmasters, dismissed reciprocal links as worthless. But now, having experienced something else other than improvements in my natural search rankings from them, I've changed my mind. So, I will boldly go where I haven't before and say that I believe reciprocal links are not in fact, dead and worthless.

Of course, if all you want to do is improve your natural search results, then reciprocal links will not help you. And these type of links should not be the only ones that you get, in terms of search ranking. But then, you shouldn't concentrate on any one type of link for that, otherwise your link profile will look unnatural.

But, like bum (or article) marketing, reciprocal links can provide a good deal of traffic when you get enough of them. And that traffic, independent of the search engines, can result in sales (if you're a product owner or affiliate), newsletter signups, or even just visitors to your site to be monetized by other means.

The secret lies not in getting one or two, or even twenty, reciprocal links. You do need a few hundred. But over time, those links, from good quality sites, can add up to a source of traffic independent of the search engines.

The problem with reciprocal linking is the fact that it can be time consuming. Looking for link partners manually can be more time than it's worth. But if you use a program to analyze the search results (there are a number out there, but I use Arelis), then this can cut down the man hours. In fact, by analyzing your competitors links, you can find which blogs they have left comments which forums may be valuable for promoting your site, and which directories they have submitted to.

Next, you'll want a way to organize your links so that it looks professional, checks the existence of the reciprocal link, and allows people to swap links with you without a lot of your input. I use a directory script for this rather than one of the old reciprocal link managers, because they have much more functionality, and look very professional. My favorite is PHP link directory. They have a free, older version, but the new version is only $25, with a link back to their site, and it is worth the small investment. You can even get included in their list of directories, which is a valuable link back from a high profile site!

I like PHP link directory because it allows you to add content to your new directory. You can accept articles from anyone, and even automatically show youtube videos embedded in the directory itself. This is a great feature that can increase the visitor value, as well as showing your potential link partners that their links will be placed in a valuable, content-rich part of your site.

Whether or not anyone believes reciprocal links are dead is really a matter of the old saying of beauty being in the eye of the beholder. If you want another source of traffic to your site, then reciprocal links are not dead. But like any form of link or traffic building, you should not focus exclusively on one thing. Get your reciprocal links, but use other forms of link building too. One way links remain the gold standard for rankings in natural search results. And one way links embedded in articles or other content are the absolute premium.

When submitting to directories there are several things you need to consider to make sure that you maximize the link popularity you receive from each directory.

First when choosing directories to submit to, look for ones that have been indexed by Google and have at least a page rank of 0. If their page rank is showing no data or a gray bar, you may want to wait before submitting to that particular directory. Second, be sure to choose the most relevant category to submit your site to. Browse through the directory and find sites that are very similar to yours and submit to the same category that they have submitted to. This will put your link and description with other similar links and descriptions thus making the link more relevant to your site.

Anchor text plays a huge role in where your website will rank. So many times I see people submit titles that no one would ever search and for the most part I would say it is a waste. Fourth, mix up the descriptions. It is easy to keep using the same description for every submission that you do, but easy is not always better in link building. You must always keep in mind that search engines want to see links that appear to happen in the natural evolution of the internet. In other words they don't want to see purchased links or links that have the same description attached to it over and over. Chances are that if they see either of those two things, your link will be discounted. Try to write as many unique descriptions as you can. Yes it can be tedious and boring but if you are willing to put in the hard work, chances are your competitors are not and that gives you a decisive advantage over them.

Fifth, try to make your submissions as random as possible. If you do 100 directory submissions every day, that doesn't appear natural to a search engine because they could see you getting 100 new links each day. Make it as random as possible so that you avoid any red flags being put up. (This suggestion is not as critical as the others because search engines wont find every link at the same time but its always better to be safe than end up on page 53 of Google's results).
